Hi, my name is Finlay (Fin), I’m an 18 year old aspiring professional triathlete racing short course triathlon and XTERRA. I’ve found success in Youth racing already as a 2x XTERRA World Champs medallist and Youth & Junior World Champion (2024), plus a National Triathlon title, as well as European Junior Cup top 6 finishes, and various triathlon, XTERRA, XC, MTB and fell running wins and podiums, both nationally and internationally.
I've been doing swimming, cycling and running since I was young. It probably started from doing mountain-biking, coming from more of a cycling background, plus swimming lessons and running cross country. My dad was an influence competing in duathlon, cycling and running. When I was about 8 I did my first duathlon, I won and loved it.
Fast forward to 2025 I qualified for the European Elite Youth Champs in Austria and took 12th, following up my debut GB representation on the road 2 weeks later with my second consecutive XTERRA World Champs medal, taking 3rd on the world stage in Italy, following on from becoming Youth & Junior World Champion in 2024.
This year, in March 2026, I headed out to Portugal for the Quarteira European Junior Cup, racing my way to 6th in arguably the highest quality European Cup of the year, in my first race as a Junior. It was a great start to the season - a well executed race.
Hurdles faced by financial costs of racing and training have really hit me hard this year, and a fair share of bad luck has really made this season challenging.
Through these difficult times though I was still able to take some highlight results, like my first pro race at SuperTri Blenheim Palace, taking 19th and the 6th fastest run split, with a 14.45 5k, quicker than some notable pros and Olympians in the field.
Two weeks ago, I had put myself into the best shape all year heading into the qualifier for the Junior World Champs in Spain, at the Super Series’ British Champs, determined to hit the end of this season at the sharp end and hit a big goal for the year. Unfortunately, blue-green algae cancelled the swim making it a duathlon and abolishing the criteria to qualify. Knowing with the previous difficulties I’d faced, I understood regardless of the result I was probably not to be selected, however I took this as a chance to show my quality and raced at the front from the start. I ran my way to 2nd place, taking my highest national series placing this year, even if that meant throwing up on the run mid way to a 15 minute 5k off the bike.
Now the season draws to an end and I head into autumn/winter 2026/2027, I’ve taken some important time to reflect on how to better myself ahead and heading through the 2027 season. The intense costs made getting to many international races not possible, and much of the difficulty I’d faced in racing had purely been down to not being quick enough in the swim which had been made difficult with less than ideal swim training, as I was unable to get to a pool. I’ve improved that now and have had to adapt to make sure I can get to places and can be consistent with my training regardless of costs affecting what’s possible. I’ve made progress across all disciplines and am working with a higher volume with 20 hour training weeks now too.
There’s no chance I’m giving up on my dream to dedicate my life to a passion and for an elite career in sport, and using that as a voice for a positive impact. I’m working hard to balance working, earning an income, training, racing and studying, to give myself the best shot at being able to race at the highest level and maximise my international and championship racing next year.
With another year in the Junior ranks, before Elite/U23 I want to make these next 6 months and after count before the 2027 season starts. I have time to build on what I want and need and it will work, but only if I make the most of the opportunity to do so, and I look forward to that and continuing with the changes, adaptations and progress I’ve made already.
Thanks
